Art@Work .................................................................................................. Orla Galligan's Art is Set in Stone Last Saturday week seen the launch of the Art@Work exhibition in Roscommon Arts Centre. Five artists from around Ireland were selected to take part in the programme, including Cavan artist, Orla Galligan. The Art@Work programme makes art more accessible to the public while providing a new stimulating environment for the artist, Roscommon Mayor John Kelly said as he officially launched the exhibition. The programme, which is run by Roscommon County Council and funded by the Arts Council, sees artists placed in businesses throughout the county during a residency period. This year the participating businesses included Feelystone from Boyle, System Label from Roscommon, FDK Engineering from Ballaghaderreen and the Abbey Hotel from Roscommon. The artists included Orla Galligan, Cavan; Ciarda Tobin, Dublin; Joanne Beirne, Roscommon; Catherine Cronogue, Leitrim and Jennie Moran, Dublin. Mayor John Kelly explained that the programme was a significant and unique outlet for contemporary art to be integrated into society. “Art@Work not only breaks down barriers between artists and workers and between art and business, but it also provides insights for us, the public audience. Often contemporary art can be seen as having little relevance to everyday life but this programme helps to introduce artists, their working processes and the work itself to new audiences and facilitates a different appreciation for the arts,” said Mayor Kelly. Cavan artist Orla Galligan was based in Feelystone, Boyle. The main piece she created was a fantastic floor sculpture entitled 'Patchwork in Stone'. It is made up of blocks of various types of stone such as granite, limestone and marble. “This piece utilises the many different types of stone available to me, I applied a symbol or design relating to my residency onto each of the 55 blocks of stone in the sculpture.” said Orla. “My art residency at Feelystone provided me with the opportunity to work with materials and processes I have not had the chance to use before. I was eager to explore the possibilities of stone and to utilise the technologies available to me. The residency gave me the chance to broaden my sculptural methods and gain a solid grounding in a new media, that will be developmental to my future work practice.” Orla said. The Art@Work exhibition continues until Saturday, August 25th in the Roscommon Arts Centre, Circular Road, Roscommon.
