Inspirations of Loughcrew at Kells Heritage Centre THE magic, mystique and myths of the megalithic site of Loughcrew, Oldcastle, Co. Meath has for the 2nd time provided the inspiration for the upcoming exhibition by the Cavan Visual Artists Network (CVAN), entitled “Inspirations of Loughcrew”, which opens at the Kells Heritage Centre on 23rd August at 8pm. Loughcrew is a place of mysterious legend, combining history & heritage with the unknown & the exhibition is reflective of this. The Loughcrew passage tombs, also known as Slieve na Calliagh, meaning Hill of the Witch, are situated South East of Oldcastle, there are over 30 mounds and cairns mostly on the two main hills, Carnbane East & Carnbane West. The cairns are identified with letters, Cairn T being the largest on Carnbane East, at approximately 120ft in diameter. The major monuments date back to 3000 B.C. making it one of the most important archaeological landscapes in Ireland having national and international importance. In the intervening years, the chambers and decorated stones have inspired many, including Dean Swift, St. Oliver Plunkett, James Martin & Lawrence Gilson. This tradition of inspiration is being up held again this year by exhibiting members of the CVAN. The work includes paintings, textiles and digital images, ranging from figurative to abstract, and the exhibition gives a diverse artistic response to Loughcrew. Some works are traditional-style landscapes based on the tangible remains of the megalithic site while other works are abstract and imaginatively inspired by the myths associated with it. |
