Minster Mansergh to Open Exhibition in Knockbride House TAKING wind as its theme, an exhibition of contemporary art, entitled Portmanteau, aims to involve an audience into thinking about the environment, its future and how dependent we are on its impact on us. The official opening will be by Dr. Martin Mansergh, Minister of State with Special Duties for the Arts, and the official welcome by Senator Joe O’Reilly. it takes place on Thursday September 4 at 8pm in Knockbride House. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. Knockbride House is near Bailieboro and Cootehill provides a peaceful and reclusive retreat for an exhibition of contemporary art. Curator, Niamh Smyth, has worked with a group of seven Cavan-based visual artists for the past year in the build up to this launch. She urged each to work in a different way than from which they normally would and this has proved positive and challenging for them. Imelda Bradley from Cavan town has focused on energy production created from wind and the changing face of the landscape. A theme echoed by Avril Gould from Crossdoney using sound and photography. Sean Cassidy from Ballyconnell sculpted a piece with a political message, while Orla Galligan from Cavan town got to grips with the environmental damage that mass consumerism is causing to the air around us. Miriam McDwyer from Belturbet focused on the destructive forces of wind as in the tornado which hit Bailieboro a few years ago. Carmel O’Callaghan returned to her interest in papier mache to make a comparison between nature and wind turbine engineering. Seed dispersal and renewal is the theme of the work by Freda Young from Killeshandra using photography and mixed media work. The exhibition is open until September 13, with opening hours: Tuesday to Friday from 4-8pm, and Saturday and Sunday 2-6pm. The exhibition at Knockbride will be signposted from Bailieboro and Canningstown. This exhibition is supported by Airtricity: Allied Irish Banks; N. Smyth, Wesleyan Chapel; Cavan Visual Artists Network and Cavan County Council Arts Office.
